Murcia - Costa Calida and the Mar Menor

Murcia is both one of 17 autonomous regions of Spain and also the capital city of the region. The city is the 7th biggest Spanish city and has a population similar to Edinburgh in the UK.

The coastal area is called Costa Calida which translates as "The Warm Coast"

I have found a superb source of information for the area
http://www.simplynetworking.es which provides information on more or less everything of interest - places of interest, weather, whats on in the area, news - in short more or less everything of importance in the region whether for residents or visitors.

If you own a "Sat Nav" it would be useful to bring it if you intend to hire a car. The roads in the area are generally excellent and most places I mention are accessed by dual carriageway or even motorway. Traffic levels are generally relatively light.

The Official website for the Murcia Region is: Murcia Tourism
and it is available in Spanish, English, French & German. You will find information on the various sub-pages in this section.

Murcia is a university city with an attractive 14th/15th century cathedral. It is located on the Segura river and stands at the crossroads of two major motorways.

The A7 runs almost the full length of Spain's southern coast & the A30 runs from Cartagena in the south to Albacete north of Murcia with onward access to Madrid.

For some retail therapy the city has some very stylish shopping and also some large shopping centres on the periphery of the city such as Nueva Condomina which has a large cinema, numerous shops & supermarkets and even hosts some live performances.

Beside the shopping centre is the stadium of Murcia Football Club, a team who are currently in La Liga 2 but 2 seasons ago were hosting Real Madrid, Barcelona and the other Spanish giants. Hopefully they can gain promotion again.
The city may be Spain's 7th largest but has an intimate feel it and has much to see & do.

We all have differing tastes & interests so why not try the city's website: MURCIA CITY

Murcia city is a 25 minute drive from La Torre.

For those who want to venture further it is possible to drive to The Alhambra Palace at Granada in 3 hours. If you do decide to visit you simply must book in advance, the earlier the better. If you are coming from the Murcia direction don't be fooled by the site of your goal on your left as you come into Granada make sure you use the A44 to Alhambra or you end seeing more of Granada than you possibly intended. Madrid in around 4 hours or maybe take a day or two in Barcelona with a drive of around 6 hours.

For winter visitors I understand that you can ski in the Sierra Nevada within about a 2-3 hour drive.

If you don't have Sat Nav the following website is excellent for directions:
